Governor Dan McKee was welcomed to Newport by Mayor Xay Khamsyvoravong at the Boys & Girls Club Newport Gymnasium at 11 this morning.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County is proud to announce that it has earned the top BrightStars rating – five stars – from the Rhode Island Association for the Education of Young Children (RIAEYC), making it the only childcare center in Newport County for all kids ages 5 to 12 to achieve this designation to date. BrightStars is Rhode Island’s Tiered Quality Rating and Improvement System (TQRIS), which is a method used in almost all states in the U.S. to assess, improve, and communicate the level of quality in early care, education and school-age settings. RIAEYC is the managing agency for BrightStars and is the state affiliate of the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County today announced that teen member Nate Powers will take the stage and perform at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s 117th annual national conference this May.
The Club says that the funding will allow them to expand its recording studio and continue to offer such programs as the evidence-based BGCA programs of Lyricism 101, which focuses on expressive writing, and MusicMakers, which teaches the fundamentals of music production.

The Newport Boys & Girls Clubs celebrated the launch of a new technology-filled Innovation Lab at its facility, made possible by a $20,000 grant from the James M. Cox Foundation. The Cox Innovation Lab was welcomed with a grand opening ceremony held by the Newport Boys & Girls Clubs at their North End Clubhouse and announced by former New England Patriot and Super Bowl Champion, Malcolm Mitchell.
