Campers at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County’s Camp Grosvenor got a sneak peek at the caliber of performances at this year’s Newport Folk Festival when The Ballroom Thieves visited the kids at the Saunderstown camp to perform, share instruments and interact with them. Since 2013, the Newport Festivals Foundation, organizers of the iconic Newport Folk Festival and Newport Jazz Festival, has collaborated with the Club to bring enriching, live performances to Club members to expose them to vocal and instrumental music, and has funded music instruction at the Clubhouse.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County welcomed U.S. Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island to its Central Clubhouse on July 8th, where he observed Club staff in action as they led members through fun and enriching activities that addressed the learning losses brought on by the past year’s COVID-related school shutdowns and distance learning.

Over the past year, our state has faced a myriad of uncertainties as we grapple with the lasting impact the coronavirus has had on our lives and those around us. I have the honor of witnessing the difference our club can make in our community firsthand, every day, as the Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County.

NEWPORT — Norelys Hunter, a Rogers High School senior with more than 200 hours of volunteer work
under her belt, was selected by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County as its Youth of the Year.

Two years ago, officials for the Florence Gray Center were concerned that they would be forced to
close due to not being able to afford the cost of maintaining it. But now, with the support of numerous
grants and donations, the important neighborhood building is receiving key repairs, with the hopes of
eventually adding more programming and space.

Reflecting on 2020

Life with COVID-19 has been difficult for us all, but it has also been a catalyst for incredible gestures of compassion. Recently the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County was inspired by the actions of Newporter Mary Anne Coen, known as Grammy, and the Mother-in-Law to Director of Development Kelley Coen.
